Believe it or not, I was able to see Hello Dolly starring Bette Midler, who gained many fans from movies such as Beaches and Hocus Pocus! And nope, I didn’t buy my tickets months in advance, nor did I pay the exorbitantly high prices currently listed on broadway.com.
I was in New York City waiting in line at The Strand for a book signing (more on that later!) when I decided to see whether I could come back after Christmas to see Hello Dolly. The lowest prices for shows in December were $499, so unfortunately, it didn’t look like I’d be able to catch my childhood favorite movie star Bette in the show. I noticed a link for Stubhub and decided to just take a look. Well, lo and behold, there were two tickets for that night’s show for under $100 each!
Of course I was hesitant to trust such a good deal online. I wavered back and forth and discussed it with my sister before we just decided to go for it. There were two sets of tickets available, both for seats in the Balcony section. One set had tickets for only $75 each, but the tickets had to be downloaded and printed out. However, the $97/ticket option required that buyers pick up the tickets at the Stubhub location (about an 8 minute walk from the Shubert Theatre). I did some research to see how much time it would take to walk from 14th Street to 39th Street, then from there to the Shubert Theatre at 44th Street. We had about an hour and a half to eat a quick dinner, pick up the tickets, and get to the theater. That sounded like it could work! We bought the tickets from our phone and knew that in less than 3 hours, we’d be seeing the show! It’s amazing what we can do with smartphones these days! We were still waiting in line for the book signing when, with the click of a button, we made amazing plans to see a show that’s on my bucket list.
Earlier that day I was walking through the Times Square area with a friend when I saw the Shubert Theatre out of the corner of my eye – I should have known that was a sign! I was so excited just to see the beautiful theater where it very loudly proclaimed who was the star of the show.
I also really liked the old-timey signs and photos all around the theater. It really created the atmosphere that you were going to see an EVENT!
Fast forward 3 hours later after we bought the tickets and, understandably, after a long wait in line to go through security, we were in our seats and ready to enjoy the show.
If you listened to the Broadway cast recording, it doesn’t do the musical justice. The performances of the whole cast is just amazing and their energy radiates throughout the theater. I highly recommend seeing it, and now you know how to get a good deal!
Have you seen the show? Let me know in the comments your thoughts!
