The most Parisian afternoon tea in Boston

When I visited a college friend in San Diego a few years ago, she invited me to attend her work colleague’s birthday party at the Ritz for afternoon tea. At this point in time, I was not the tea aficionada that I am now, and I had no idea of any the refined rituals afternoon tea entailed. Well, one look at the fancy setting, the carefully curated selection of loose teas, the delicate teapots and teacups, plus everyone taking their manners up a notch, and I was hooked for life!

Ever since then, I love going for afternoon tea both locally and when I travel. One of the poshest that I’ve found in Boston is at the Taj Boston. And where do you have your afternoon tea while at the Taj? Well, of course in the French Room, surrounded by chandeliers, upholstered sofas and chairs, and fine china!

I know afternoon tea is usually considered a British pastime, and for good reason, but when the French are known for refinement, beauty, and delicious food that are also works of art, I have to give them some credit taking the concept of afternoon tea and elevating it to the spectacular afternoon tea that I enjoyed at the Taj.

A peek at the first page of the afternoon tea menu and its history at Taj Boston (which used to be a Ritz hotel).

Service was attentive but respectful, allowing us to indulge in the three-tiers of sandwiches, pastries, and scones. I think we spent a leisurely couple of hours here.

I love that they even provided fancy tea strainers for each of us. I never knew I needed one until that day! I ended up buying a beautiful stainless steel tea strainer for myself when I visited the Biltmore Estate for $5, so if you see them for sale at fancy shops like Fortnum & Mason, just know that you can find them for under $60!

We also ordered a cheese platter, because why not? Eating cheese after a meal is a French must-do!

Since they provide a lot of food, you have to option of taking extras home with you in this convenient box. (Not a very French thing to do….)

Alas, my pictures of this afternoon tea are few and far between. It must have been amazing if I didn’t remember to take any pictures!
